Q&A with HYP Member: John Ball

What do you do for work and what do you do in your free time?

I am an Insurance Broker, In my free time I try to either enjoy hanging out downtown, going fishing, long drives really getting lost in the woods, volunteering, and lounging around sometimes.

How did you land in Helena?

Family and central location to Bozeman, Billings, Missoula, and Great Falls

What is the best piece of advice that you ever received – career-related or otherwise?

The best piece of advice I ever received was being told I would fail in life but that that's ok and how we grow as individuals and how we grow in our careers

When do you feel the most yourself?

If I am out Fishing and it gets dark being able to look at the stars in the middle of nowhere being reminded that we are small but that's ok.

Where is the last place you explored and where do you want to explore next?

The last place I explored was actually doing a floating trip down the Yellowstone with some family and good friends, The next new place I would want to really explore would have to be taking a longer backpacking trip into glacier to really enjoy the nature and feeling of the area.

What do you recommend someone new to town try out? 

Hiking mount Helena is a must for someone new to town and a fun place to go, after that always heading to windbag for a local brew and good food.

The ability to network, and how it can really allow you to meet other people getting comfortable in the area along with adding value and growth potential for individuals.

Tell us something about yourself that we didn’t ask:

I am a huge nerd and love space and nerd out when new planets in the goldilocks zone are discovered. I am the type of person who will pull over and help someone with a flat tire and break my thumb in the process.
